May is Community Action Month—a time to honor the work that Community Action Agencies like ours have been doing for more than 60 years. From early childhood education to food assistance, job training to senior services, our mission is rooted in the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Here at the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, Inc. (EOC), we’re proud to stand alongside the families we serve, the staff who give their all, and the partners and donors who make our work possible. Together, we’re not just addressing immediate needs—we’re building lasting change, one community at a time.

This month, we’re highlighting programs that change lives, and celebrating the incredible people behind the scenes. Here’s a look at how each of our centers is making a real difference every day.

Glen Cove EOC: The Heartbeat of Hope

At the heart of the Glen Cove EOC is a deep commitment to serving the evolving needs of the community. With services like weekly produce distributions, a daily-access food pantry, utility assistance through Project Warmth, and food cards via the EFSP program, the center ensures no one is left behind. It also offers senior employment opportunities in partnership with the Urban League, youth enrichment programs, and monthly educational workshops. The Glen Cove EOC is more than a service center—it’s a place where people come to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

The Rockville Centre–Lakeview EOC supports children, families, and seniors through a wide range of programs. Its Rockville Centre Head Start program sets young learners on a path to success, while its Classic Seniors program offers transportation, wellness workshops, and social activities that keep older adults active and connected. The center also hosts a Youth Council and summer program for children ages 6 to 12, as well as food assistance and clothing distribution for families in need. Guided by a local Advisory Council, this center ensures that community voices are heard and needs are met.

The Port Washington Community Action Council is a vital resource for individuals of all ages. Youth benefit from college tours, summer employment, homework help, and leadership programs. Adults and seniors can access rental and utility support, immigration advocacy, and educational referrals for ESL and GED programs. A well-stocked food pantry and community outreach efforts round out a program that balances immediate relief with long-term empowerment. It’s a place where goals are set, progress is made, and dreams are supported.

hEMPSTEAD cap : a COMMUNITY IN MOTION

Hempstead CAP is a hub of support, engagement, and inclusion. Youth programs include the Hempstead EOC Soccer Club, afterschool activities, and a leadership-building Youth Council. Seniors stay active through the WISE Visionaries program, which blends social connection with lifelong learning. Families in need can access food, rental, and utility assistance, as well as support navigating social services. Whether it’s through advocacy, education, or direct aid, Hempstead CAP is helping neighbors rise together.

This center is all about opportunity and empowerment. The Roosevelt–Freeport EOC provides youth with summer jobs, career training through the Youth Empowerment Career Training Initiative (YECTI), and leadership development via its Youth Council. Seniors benefit from the Wisdom League, offering wellness and education in a supportive environment. The center also provides food assistance, emergency support for rent and utilities, and practical tools like internet access and résumé help. It’s a place where families find strength, stability, and a pathway forward.
