EOC’s Summer Youth Program Builds Skills, Confidence, and Community

Each summer, the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, Inc. (EOC) launches one of its most impactful and inspiring initiatives: the Summer Youth Program. This beloved seasonal program is more than just a way to keep kids busy—it’s a structured, supportive, and enriching experience that engages children and teens in educational activities, leadership development, and meaningful recreation.

Designed with a two-tiered approach, the program reaches youth of different age groups with tailored experiences that promote growth, responsibility, and a sense of belonging.

For Children Ages 6–12: Learning Through Play and Purpose

At the heart of the Summer Youth Program is a full-day experience for children ages 6 to 12. Hosted at various community sites across Nassau County, this program offers families a reliable and nurturing environment where children can stay engaged during the summer months.

With a mix of academic enrichment, arts and crafts, recreational sports, and STEM activities, children explore new ideas, build friendships, and stay active in a safe, supervised setting. Enriching field trips and cultural projects expand their horizons, while team-building games help them develop social skills and self-confidence.

For Teens Ages 16–21: Leading, Learning, and Earning

Running in tandem with the children’s programming is EOC’s Summer Youth Employment Program—a dynamic opportunity for older youth to gain job experience, leadership training, and workplace skills. Teens serve as junior counselors, supporting younger participants while receiving hands-on experience in mentoring and team leadership.

Key highlights of the program include:

  • Paid positions for selected youth, with additional roles for enthusiastic volunteers
  • Leadership and professionalism training
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Career-readiness workshops focusing on communication, time management, and more
  • Ongoing mentorship from dedicated EOC staff

Whether earning a paycheck or volunteering, all junior counselors leave with a deeper sense of purpose, enhanced confidence, and tangible skills that prepare them for future employment and educational opportunities.

A Summer of Growth and Opportunity

The EOC Summer Youth Program is more than just a seasonal offering—it’s a community investment in the potential of Nassau County’s youth. Supervised by trained adult staff and supported by teen leaders, this initiative fosters an environment where young people feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

For families, it’s a vital support system. For children and teens, it’s a gateway to learning, leadership, and lifelong memories.

As summer unfolds, EOC is proud to provide this enriching and impactful experience—shaping the next generation one child, one leader, and one summer at a time.
