What is the LEAPS After-School Program?
The LEAPS After-School Program (Learning Enrichment Academic Program Supports) is a collaborative initiative between the Hempstead School District and the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, Inc. Licensed and funded by the New York State Office of Child and Family Services, and it operates as a certified School-Age Child Care Program in the following schools:
Barack Obama,
David Paterson,
Joseph McNeil
The program’s primary objective is to offer academic support and enrichment opportunities to help students achieve academic and personal goals while preparing them for future learning and life experiences. It emphasizes students’ social-emotional wellness and addresses challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding access to critical support services. LEAPS also fosters strong community and family engagement through mentorship programs, employment assistance, and life skills training for both students and their families.
Additionally, LEAPS provides crucial family support services, including food assistance, rent support, immigration advocacy, and workforce development training, helping to ensure the well-being of the entire household. This comprehensive approach enhances students' academic growth and overall development while building resilience and stability within the community.
